Improve Your Smile By Taking Care Of Your Receding Gums

When your gums begin to recede, they retract from your teeth, exposing more of the gum surface area and in some cases, their roots. Although gum recession in Wayne, NJ, can affect the overall appearance of your smile, gum recession is an issue that may go unnoticed at first, but may gradually worsen over time.

Common Causes Of Gum Recession

There are many different reasons why gums may begin to recede in certain places. These include some of the following:

·         Gum disease – when your gums start to recede, there is more room for bacteria to accumulate in the surrounding areas of your teeth. Bacteria can destroy your teeth and your gum tissue and remains one of the leading causes of gum recession.

·         Aggressive brushing – when you brush your teeth too aggressively, you may find that your gums start to recede away in certain areas.

·         Your genetics – even if you brush and floss diligently, your gums may still recede if your genetics predispose you to periodontal disease.

Additionally, hormonal changes, particularly among women, and insufficient dental care can also lead to gum recession.

What Is The Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique?

If you come into our office to inquire about receding gums, Dr. Laurence C. Brieterman may suggest the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique. When this technique is utilized, Dr. Brieterman uses a special tool to loosen the gum tissue, accessible by a pinhole created in the gums. After the gum tissue is loosened, Dr. Brieterman repositions the tissue accordingly, over the area where the gums have receded.

This procedure is often preferred by patients because it instantaneously improves the appearance of their smile, without the associated extensive post-operative bleeding, swelling, and pain. If you are interested in restoring the aesthetics of your smile, in honor of National Self-Improvement Month, contact our office to set up an appointment with Dr. Brieterman by calling (973) 988-4491.
