If you have experienced bone loss or gum recession due to periodontal disease or other issues, Dr. Laurence Breiterman may recommend bone grafting or soft tissue grafting for optimal treatment. These surgical procedures can repair damage, enhance your appearance and improve your oral health.
Soft tissue grafting may be necessary for patients with receding gums due to periodontal disease or other oral trauma. Receding gums can cause sensitivity and increase the risk of root surface damage and decay. Tissue grafting typically involves removing soft tissue from another area of your mouth, usually the palate. In some cases, the sample may be obtained from a tissue bank. The graft tissue is then sutured in place and allowed to heal. With both bone grafting and tissue grafting procedures, you will need to follow a restricted diet during healing. Soft, cool food is recommended to prevent damaging the areas. Healing usually takes a couple of weeks.
