Bone Grafting

You may have experienced a loss of bone density if you have been missing teeth for a period of time or suffered advanced periodontal disease. Excessive bone loss can make it difficult to plan for successful tooth replacement. Facial structure also changes with bone loss, leaving patients looking older. The bone grafting procedure involves collecting bone from another part of your body, usually the chin, and grafting it to the affected area. In some cases, Dr. Breiterman may use bone from a bone bank or a non-human source. The donor bone tissue is held in place with titanium screws and will fuse to the existing bone as it heals. Once the bone graft has fully healed, Dr. Breiterman can proceed with the next step in your treatment plan.

Soft Tissue Grafting

Soft tissue grafting may be necessary for patients with receding gums due to periodontal disease or other oral trauma. Receding gums can cause sensitivity and increase the risk of root surface damage and decay. Tissue grafting typically involves removing soft tissue from another area of your mouth, usually the palate. In some cases, the sample may be obtained from a tissue bank. The graft tissue is then sutured in place and allowed to heal. With both bone grafting and tissue grafting procedures, you will need to follow a restricted diet during healing. Soft, cool food is recommended to prevent damaging the areas. Healing usually takes a couple of weeks.

Patients from Franklin Lakes, Kinnelon, Montville, Oakland and Pompton Lakes, NJ are encouraged to call Wayne, NJ dentist Dr. Breiterman for more information on bone grafting and tissue grafting procedures.

three types of tissue grafting procedures

This is the most common type of tissue graft. A flap is created in your palate and the connective tissue layer below the surface is used.
This technique gains access through a pinhole opening in the gums to repair the recessed area. Traditionally, gum recession treatment involves grafting tissue from another portion of your mouth to cover the area in deficit.
Alloderm allows the gums to be treated effectively if it becomes damaged or starts to recede. Alloderm offers a faster healing time from other gum disease treatments. Alloderm is essentially tissue grafting that does not require the harvesting of gum tissue from other areas of the mouth.
